ligament damage a stronger ref would of sent them both off but didnt. and in extra time much of the same ,the game went to pens which hodnet won 3-0. this was the worst game weve played in all season, the pitch was like a junior pitch with no space to play,we missed important players and did not have the strength in depth to change it,against a very poor team.we had to play players out of DIVISION 2 LEAGUE CUP FINAL Crewe FC (1) 1 Whitchurch Alport (2) 3 Whitchurch Alport landed their first piece of silverware of the season at the impressive Victoria Stadium in a hard fought encounter against Crewe writes Martin Wild. Goals from Darragh O'Callaghan, Tom Price and Tim Drohan saw Alport lift the League Cup for only the second time in their history. For luckless Crewe, this was their third successive final defeat and in some ways they will wonder why they didn't end that sequence. They completely dominated the opening half hour with Alport barely able to string two passes together on an immaculate playing surface. For all their possession though, they offered little in the final third with only routine stops required from keeper Nick Ashley. Goals can change matches and Whitchurch struck twice in three minutes wholly against the run of play. Drohan's excellent through ball carved open the Crewe defence and O'Callaghan - playing on the shoulder of the last man - was onto it like a shot. The striker took one touch before calmly slotting the ball beyond the former Alport keeper Wes Newton and into the bottom corner of the net. Before Crewe had chance to recover from the shock of falling behind, the Reds struck again. A high free-kick from Lee Constantine should have seen Newton claim the ball but Price's challenge was enough to distract the keeper and the ball went into the goal off the midfielder's back. It was somewhat fortuitous but no-one from Shropshire was complaining. Newton certainly was, and he received a yellow card for his protests after the referee's assistant called the excellent match official over to have a word. Strangely, the booking was to work in Crewe's favour because in the dying seconds of the additional time applied by the excellent Paul Wilcox, they grabbed a lifeline. Alport desperately tried to clear a set-piece but the ball found the lurking Matthew Worral and the midfielder fired home from 12 yards. The second-half started much like the first with Crewe seeing much more of the ball, but they still couldn't penetrate into the danger zone and Alport merely soaked up the pressure. The strikers were feeding on less than scraps with the midfield overrun at times and the odd counter attack was all Whitchurch could muster. But in one of them midway through the half, they effectively killed the game. Drohan ran unchallenged from deep and his shot from just outside the box took the slightest of deflections to deceive Newton - who had gone close five minutes earlier with a wicked swerving 30 yard free-kick which was just kept out by Ashley. Ashley was to make another crucial save with six minutes remaining to deny skipper Mike Goddard and Ryan Wilkinson went close for Alport towards the end with a clever chip which went a yard over. Captain Gavin Brocklehurst was last up to receive his medal before hoisting the trophy high into the Northwich sky in front of his jubilant team mates, on a night where Whitchurch may have rode their luck at times, but had found the collective resolve to grind out an excellent result. Manager Andy Allmark was delighted with his team's success: "We went there with a game plan to try and contain them, as we were aware of the threat they can cause having lost the league game 4-2 at Yockings earlier in the campaign," he said. "And that's what happened. We relied heavily on the counter and couldn't get out of our half for 25 minutes. We had to take our chances when they came along and thankfully we've done that. Darragh usually only needs one chance and you saw how well he took his goal. We missed that on Saturday and ended up losing the game. We defended very well and Nick didn't need to make too many saves, and on the night the lads deserve their victory for how hard they've worked and how well they carried out our instructions." Darragh O'Callaghan hit a hat-trick to earn Whitchurch a final place against Crewe, with Chris Suddaby also on the scoresheet in a game Alport dominated from first to last. On Tuesday night, Alport were three behind at Greenfields with Tom Rogers' early penalty getting the hosts in front. Captain Duncan Swann-Horler despatched a free header from a corner midway through the first half to double their lead and a poor clearance from goalkeeper Nick Ashley all but sealed the Reds' fate when Tom Ward found the net from distance with Ashley struggling to get back in his goal. After the break Lee Constantine threw Alport a lifeline but Swann Horler scored again just before the hour for a 4-1 finish. The biggest disappointment on the night was the dismissal of influential skipper Gavin Brocklehurst, but manager Andy Allmark is hoping for a one game ban when news of the suspension comes through. On Saturday, on a heavy Yockings Park pitch, Alport were far too strong for their ill-disciplined opponents. Runcorn players were in the face of the referee all afternoon and they played the bulk of the second half a man down when the inevitable second yellow was shown to David Graven who quite simply lost control. O'Callaghan's first came after 20 minutes with a cool finish, rounding keeper Carl Williams and finding the net from a tight angle. Constantine's probing cross was headed home at the back post by Suddaby after 34 minutes to give the Reds a cushion, and after the break Alport pressed home their extra man advantage with O'Callaghan opening his body to find the corner for three-nil after more good work by the ever menacing Constantine. Nick Ashley was called into action twice late on in the second half to thwart Jack Burbidge but as Runcorn tired Whitchurch went in for the kill. Constantine and substitute Lee Stephens both had excellent chances to make it four, but just before the whistle O'Callaghan's persistence took him into the box and he finished with aplomb with a right foot shot into the corner of the net to complete his treble. Goals from Tom Price, Neil Marsh and substitute Jim Lawrence were enough to keep luckless Malpas rooted at the foot of the table. But the visitors were furious with the referee when he failed to award a penalty after Robbie Cardis fell under Dave Suddaby's clumsy clearance early in the second half. Within five minutes Malpas found themselves two behind and never looked like recovering. They had started brightly enough and could have gone in front as they caught Alport napping at the start, and the home side were indebted to Nick Ashley who made two reactionary stops to deny Rich Hamer and John Stubbs in the same attack. Ryan Wilkinson had the first shot on goal from the hosts perspective but opted for power over precision and gave Jordan Roberts a chance to save having been sent clear by skipper Price's clever pass. Malpas belied their lowly league position and were clearly in the mood to ruffle a few Whitchurch feathers, although Matty Dutton's goal line clearance denied Lee Stephens an opener when he flicked on a corner. Malpas were dealt a huge blow after 27 minutes when keeper Roberts suffered a nasty shoulder injury in a committed challenge with Marsh, and his place was taken by striker Jack Oakden who plied his trade for much of last season in Alport's colours. Moments after the waved away penalty claims John Farrell's inviting cross was sent back across goal by Price's looping header and the ball landed just inside the post to give Alport the lead. And soon after Price was involved again - this time laying on a superb pass to Marsh who had timed his run beautifully from midfield to clamly slot home the second. There was to be no way back for Malpas and a second, half-hearted penalty appeal, and a header which looped onto the top of the bar where all they could muster as a threat to Ashley's goal. Lawrence blasted home the third with a sweet angled left footer after more determined play by Marsh with 14 minutes left and Price had a goal rightly disallowed for offside just before the final whistle. The margin of the victory may have slightly flattered Alport but they ran out worthy winners on the balance of play. For Malpas, they will look at injuries, suspensions, and key decisions going against them as reasons why they went back home with nothing to show for their evening's work.
