  Commander Ethleston Cup Final

Monday 3rd May 2010
Yockings Park, Whitchurch

Whitchurch Alport 3 Ellesmere Rangers Reserves 2
Whitchurch fought back from conceding two early goals to wrestle the Ethelston Cup from last year's winners. In a pulsating encounter at Yockings Park, Alport found themselves two in arrears in the opening 12 minutes, but turned the game on its head to condemn Rangers to their third successive Cup Final defeat in the last seven days!
Ellesmere came out of the traps seemingly determined to put behind them the disappointment of the Powell Cup defeat to Wem 24 hours earlier. And when referee Alan Davies awarded them a penalty adjudging Peter Eley to have held onto Graham Dyke, Chris Cathrall confidently despatched the kick to open the scoring after just 5 minutes of play.
Before Alport had chance to adjust to the setback, Wayne Withers banged home number two from the edge of the box, just minutes after Scott Graham had gone within inches of a second with a sensational strike from fully 40 yards.
Incredibly, Whitchurch came back at their opponents and Chris Suddaby's precision far post header found the corner of the net from Scott Thomas's deep cross two minutes later.
Graham certainly had his eyes set on goal and only a fingertip save from Stuart McIntosh in the Alport goal prevented Ellesmere's number eleven from celebrating with a text book volley - again from distance.
Whatever they put in the half-time tea at Yockings certainly did the trick. Twice in the space of five minutes Alport came close to levelling, but Suddaby and Tom Price were both denied by fantastic goalkeeping from Lee Davies.
Rangers couldn't stem the tide and it came as no surprise when skipper Darryl Thornton rapped home an equaliser from the edge of the box, when Ellesmere failed to clear a corner just before the hour. And three minutes later Whitchurch scored the winner when substitute Lee Stephens scored with an angled drive to settle the match.
Ellesmere threw everything they could muster in the closing stages of the game, but Whitchurch almost made it four when a sweeping move involving the tireless Gavin Brocklehurst and Stephens, saw the ball break for Tom Price. The midfielder had timed his run to perfection and deserved better than to see his 20 yarder crash down off the underside of the crossbar.
In the end, it mattered not and Alport regained the trophy they last held in 2008.

alport travelled to promotion chaseing denton and came away with all 3 points ,in an even first half with both teams creating half chances and both defences looking solid ,alport forwards michael sutton and jordy kennedy both causing the denton defence problems 0-0 half time .alport then had the breakthrough on the hour when sutton lathed on to a through ball and from 20 yards out smashed the ball on the half volley into the roof of the net to put alport 0-1 up .denton then pressed to draw level but found the alport team hard to break down with some excellent defending and alports keeper wes newton in fine form ,alport played denton on the counter attack with chances falling to sutton twice and rob pearce.

this game and warrington 2 weeks ago was the performances of the season the team did there jobs and worked hard all round the pitch and deserved the 3 points ,but that's what they've got to do week in week out

ethleston cup semi final
Whitchurch Alport 3 Prees United 0
Three goals in the last twenty minutes saw Whitchurch secure a place in the Ethelston Cup Final. But they had to be patient in breaking down the stubborn resistance of the United defence in a fiercely contested derby on the muddy Yockings Park surface.
Incessant rain in the build-up to the game failed to deter around 150 spectators who attended the Good Friday fixture, and they saw the home side having the better of the chances throughout, with Will Hopkins the busier of the two goalkeepers.
Lee Stephens and Gavin Brocklehurst had both missed decent openings for Alport in the opening half-hour, before Tim Bowen wasted United's best chance when he shot weakly at Wes Newton after good work down the Prees left.
The game finally burst into life ten minutes before the break. Scott Thomas and John Farrell linked well to create an opening for busy midfielder Tom Price, but he saw his left foot shot well held by Hopkins.
Wes Newton then saw his only really meaningful action in the match when he made two saves in quick succession to deny Mark Rolfe and Ryan Edge as United finished the half strongly. But it was Alport who almost snatched an interval lead when Price's diving header was brilliantly pushed away by Hopkins.
The rain thankfully subsided in the second-half and it took a while for the game to get any kind of momentum. When it did, Thomas, Stephens and Farrell all made Hopkins work, but the Prees goalkeeper was equal to anything thrown at him and the game looked like it might be heading for extra-time.
A momentary lapse in concentration though finally led to the breakthrough. Whitchurch took a quick throw with United having switched off for a second and Brocklehurst's low cross was snapped up by Price whose low finish was clinical.
The visitors weren't offering too much going forward and had expended boundless energies on a sapping pitch, so it came as little surprise when defender Chris Suddaby (87) and substitute Matt Baldwin (90) added further goals to rubber-stamp the home side's passage to the final.
The scoreline might have slightly flattered Alport, but few would argue that Andy Allmark's side deserve their place in the final.
whitchurch alport fc now have a training session at yockings park this thursday 6-30pm followed by an away fixture at warrington town on sat april 10th k/o 3pm

daten 1 whitchurch alport 1

alport started the better side putting daten under pressure and having a lot of possession of the ball but could not find that final ball to create an opening ,alport had a number of corners but could not find a way through the daten defence ,the best chance fell to scott thomas who was unlucky not to finish .just minutes before half time daten got the breakthrough when a free kick which alport keeper wes newton thought it was going over the bar ,but dipped and came back off the bar alport failed to respond to the ball coming back and scott swales headed into the corner off the net for there first chance of the game ,this was a sucker punch to alport who had dominated the first half .1-0 h/t .

the second half saw much of the same alport taking the game to daten ,alport made a triple substituion when oakden brassington and armor replaced baldwin stephens and eley, eley coming off after a eye injury .alport started to create chances with thomas going close on a couple of shots ,midfielder john farrell had a long range effort headed off the line with the daten keeper beaten ,daten then saw alports keeper wes newton make 2 fine saves down at his near post .the daten keeper also made a good block save from thomas on the line which he did not know much about ,alport final got the goal back with 5 mins remaining after constant pressure and corners the ball fell to scott thomas who turned from 8 yards out to strike and score giving the daten keeper no chance f/t 1-1

we got the breakthrough in the end ,had the goal come a bit earlier we would of gone on to win the game ,but again as in most games this season we have had most of the ball and possession but failed to turn the chances into goals

whitchurch alport 1  monk fc 2

whitchurch alport opened the scoring on 20 mins when a scramble in the monk pen area fell to midfielder peter eley who notched from 6 yards to put alport in front .monk drew level on the half hour when a cross from the monk right was headed home passed alport keeper wes newton h/t 1-1 .alport were forced into a change with midfielder tom price coming off with a dead leg and being replaced by jack oakden returning from injury ,both teams playing poor second half ,but both looking for the winner alport in the last 15 mins put on rob brassington and ryan wilkinson to change the front line ,but the ref telling every one a minute to play and 5 mins! later last kick off the game monk broke away and scored to win the game

again players were missing through work willis, nevett ,denson and baldwin inj .this was a lacklustre performance ,not good enough and the some of the players need to look at there performances.
