LOCAL FOOTBALL:
Several nights of plummeting temperatures led to the inevitable postponement of Alport's game with Crewe FC on Saturday. The Yockings Park pitch was iced over, and all of our local sides have now been without a game for almost a month.
Weather permitting, attention now turns to a mouth-watering Shropshire County Cup quarter-final tie at home to Ellesmere Rangers at the weekend (1.30 pm). Manager Andy Allmark is desperate to defend the trophy which the club won back in April at the Prostar Stadium, but has acknowledged already that the club have a tough task ahead of them if they are to reach the last four. Ellesmere - from the West Midland Premier League - are one of the favourites to win the County Cup. It's not difficult to understand why either. Their miserly defence has conceded only 13 goals in 21 league games so far this season; a record that has helped the club to within a point of the league leaders. They reached the quarter final stage courtesy of a 4-1 home win over Bridgnorth, which came in the middle of a seven game winning run. Alport's defenders will need to keep close tabs on danger man Danny Barton, who has plundered a remarkable 22 goals already this season!
Allmark recognises the strength of the opposition for the tie, and is desperate to stage the match after the enforced lay-off since that thrilling 5-4 vistory at Monk on December 12th.
"We've found it hard to train because of the weather," he said. "The frost has even affected the astro-turf at the leisure Centre and then of course it was closed for Christmas. The players have just had to keep their fitness levels up through jogging and going to the gym. We've managed to book an indoor training session for tonight (Wednesday) between 6.15 and 8.15, where the squad will be worked hard ahead of Saturday's match. But really, there's no substitute for match practice - though we aren't the only club in the area that's had no games, and that includes Ellesmere. We'll have to be at our best to get through. They're sure to bring a few fans with them and I really hope the people of Whitchurch come out to support us for this one. I want them to know that their support means a lot to the club and it really helps the players. The team will be really up for this one, and if they get the support of the locals, it might just make the difference."
Allmark is hoping that the cold-snap ends in the days leading up to the game.
"Notwithstanding work commitments, we will have a full squad to choose from, apart from Dave Johnson and Jack Oakden who have long-term injuries. If the weather breaks towards the end of the week, we hope the frost can come out of the ground so that we can prepare the pitch for the game, and give ourselves every chance to make it through to the semis. If fans want to keep in touch with whether or not the game is on, they can call 07885 866739 or visit our website www.whitchurchalportfc.co.uk for the very latest information."
